About River Journal

The first issue of The River Journal was printed in December, 1993 by Dennis Nicholls, out of Noxon, Mont. For the first few years, distribution was limited to Trout Creek, Noxon and Heron in Montana, and to Clark Fork and Hope in Idaho. In 1996 The River Journal's readership expanded with a direct mail campaign to residents in Bonner County, Idaho and Sanders County, Montana. In 2001, Dennis left The River Journal and began to write area hiking guides, and Trish Gannon purchased the newspaper. Today, The River Journal is distributed free in racks from Plains, Montana west to Priest River, Idaho, and from Bonner's Ferry in northern Idaho's Boundary County all the way to North Idaho College in Kootenai County. It is published on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. The paper is read in over 17 local communities covering two states and four counties. Approximately 6,000 copies are distributed each issue.
